Making kale chips is a quick and easy way to satisfy your crunchy and salty snack cravings in a healthy way. Leafy and green, kale is a super healthy vegetable. At the supermarket, kale chips are a costly alternative. Because they are very light and extremely fragile, the ones from the store are typically mostly crumbs by the time you get them home. Baking them yourself, provides a cost savings, helps you know exactly what ingredients they contain, and helps keep the pieces more intact for munching.
- 1 bunch fresh kale (I prefer the flatter leafed Lacinato, but any type will do)
- 1 tablespoon oil (I like avocado or macadamia nut oil, olive oil works well too)
- salt or Your favorite seasoning (you can get really creative here, garlic powder, ginger, chili powder, whatever combination you like)
You'll also need baking parchment or foil.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. If you have a convection oven now is a good time to use it.
Start with clean, dry kale for best results. Cut the stem out of each leaf of kale and then cut the leaves into chip size (2-3 inch) pieces.
Toss the leaves in a bowl and drizzle with the oil. If I am using multiple seasonings like garlic, ginger and paprika I will stir them into the oil before I drizzle it, then mix it around with my hands to get both sides of the kale well coated. You could also season them after you lay them out on the tray.
Lay the chips out in a single layer on a parchment lined tray. I used to be really fussy about laying them out all nice and neat, but it really doesn't matter if they touch or overlap a bit. The leaves that are touching will not get quite as crispy, but I like the slightly chewy texture ones too.
Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Start checking them closely at 10 minutes because nobody likes burnt chips. In a convection oven, they will cook a bit faster.
We like them warm right out of the oven, if you are making them to eat later on a road trip or school lunch remember they are quite fragile, they will keep in an airtight container for 2-3 days on the counter.
